I am aware of the official definitions of the era and there are several. According to the Georgetown.edu website, the post modern or pomo movement in arts and culture goes like this:
an intentional movement in arts, culture, philosophy, and politics
that uses various strategies to subvert what is seen as dominant in
modernism or modernity...play, irony, challenge to official seriousness,
subversion of earnestness...hybridity, promiscuous genres,
recombinant culture, intertextuality, pastiche.
Okay, I get most of that; but that definition is also a parameter, a limitation in a backhanded kind of way. Does Post Modernity wear a uniform? Is there a formula? I'm thinking I might not want my words waiting in parade dress for the band to begin to play.
So once again, I will strike out on my own. I prefer a less self-conscious style. I have a way to go before I produce enough poetry to fill a book in my next experiment with style. I will see where my quest for an un-uniformed, freedom of style, and content leads me as opposed to 'subversion' of modernism (uh, not that there's anything wrong with that). Still, subverting the subversion may prove interesting and my inspiration. Or, will my art be an inevitable part of the era into which it will be born? Time and inspiration will play out.
My poetry books will be published this Fall.
Until my next blog,
